ByteDance’s Doubao AI Learning Links Explanation, Practice and Review in Upgrade
On September 17, ByteDance's AI learning assistant Doubao AI Learning announced a functional upgrade covering AI Q&A, AI Teacher, Doubao Class and a newly launched feature, Doubao Sync Course. The aim is to connect explanation, follow-up questioning, practice and review into one continuous path.
AI Q&A, AI Teacher and Doubao Class had been released earlier and were upgraded this time; Doubao Sync Course is the newest addition.
In the new AI Q&A, Doubao AI Learning has built more than 2,000 task-specific capabilities for study scenarios, described as dedicated learning "Skills." The system calls up different Skills depending on the situation to generate tailored study tools.
These capabilities are not an extension of general chat ability. They are designed around the real actions of learning: from previewing a new lesson, explaining a knowledge point and after-class practice, down to the stroke order of a Chinese character or an English spelling test, all of which can be triggered naturally in a single sentence. For example, when a student asks for a quick review of the Pythagorean theorem, AI Q&A does not simply restate it — it continues the conversation and uses knowledge flash cards, exercises and interactive courseware to deepen understanding.
AI Teacher is not one-way delivery. It imitates the moves of an offline teacher, pausing at key moments to ask "Are you following?" in order to probe whether the student has internalized a core step or concept. Asked about the relationship between the three sides of a triangle, it does not give the conclusion directly but asks in return what condition three line segments must satisfy to form one. Students can interrupt at any time and the teacher will rephrase, using drawings and on-screen writing to support difficult points.
Doubao Class turns classical poetry and prose from textbooks into visual, interactive AI lessons, recreating scenes hidden in the text's annotations. The AI teacher asks questions during the lesson, and students can question the characters in the scene at any time.
Where those three features address learning deeply, Doubao Sync Course addresses keeping up. It matches knowledge points by grade and textbook edition, follows the textbook chapter by chapter and breaks each unit down point by point. It can be used for previewing before class and for filling gaps afterwards.
Doubao AI Learning began development in 2024. According to QuestMobile's ranking of AI-native app user scale for the first half of 2026 released in August, it placed sixth, with monthly active users reaching 19.44 million in June.
Rather than being a tool that simply supplies answers, Doubao AI Learning positions itself as a learning companion that helps students genuinely understand — and it now covers content from primary school through postgraduate study. ByteDance's overseas tutoring app Gauth is moving in the same direction. Launched in 2020, Gauth has surpassed 200 million downloads and recently rolled out AI Course in full, offering contextualized history lessons and systematic interactive math lessons, with a user-generated route that lets anyone turn a topic into an interactive AI lesson.
As AI capabilities advance, both products are pushing beyond simple problem-solving toward all-in-one learning platforms.
