China's Ministry of Education Launches Upgraded Teacher Development Center With AI Literacy Training
China's Ministry of Education held a field conference on AI-empowered teacher development in Beijing on October 10, state broadcaster CCTV reported. At the event the ministry relaunched the national smart education platform's Teacher Development Center in upgraded form and launched a full-coverage artificial intelligence literacy training programme for teachers.
The conference was held at Beijing Guangqumen Middle School, with Minister of Education Huai Jinpeng and Vice Minister Du Jiangfeng in attendance, according to China Youth Daily. Its theme was preparing teachers for the digital and intelligent era and using that shift to support the high-quality development of basic education.
The upgraded Teacher Development Center opens a dedicated AI literacy zone that brings together AI learning resources, intelligent tools and professional learning communities. The zone is designed to underpin both self-directed study by teachers and the ministry's full-coverage training push.
As the first lesson of that programme, the ministry invited frontline teachers, school principals and heads of local education bureaus to run immersive, scenario-based demonstration sessions. Rather than lectures on theory, the sessions show AI in use across the five links of lesson preparation, classroom teaching, student assessment, teaching research and reflection, and school governance.
The demonstrations run through the entire teaching chain - before class, during class, after class, teaching research and governance - rather than focusing on a single tool or subject. The stated aim is to help teachers move along a path from learning about AI, to using AI, to creating with AI.
Ministry officials framed the goal as using AI to empower teaching and teacher development so that instruction can be better tailored to individual students. The conference also linked that aim to cultivating students' scientific interest, innovation awareness and practical ability - outcomes that go beyond test preparation.
The launch follows the 'AI Plus Education' action plan issued in April 2026 by the Ministry of Education together with four other central departments, which set out how artificial intelligence should be woven into teaching, assessment and school management nationwide. The new center and training programme turn that policy direction into an operational delivery channel on an existing national platform.
Hosting the training on the national smart education platform matters for scale. 'Full coverage' signals that the programme is meant to reach the entire teaching workforce through a platform already in everyday use, rather than piloting with a selected cohort of model schools.
For edtech vendors, the signal is that AI professional development in China is shifting from scattered pilots toward a standardised, platform-delivered baseline. Products that plug into the ministry's five-link framework - lesson planning, classroom delivery, assessment, research and governance - are more likely to align with what teachers are being trained to do.
