China issued a new guideline on textbook management on Tuesday, in accordance with which overseas textbooks are banned in primary and junior high schools.

According to the document by China’s Ministry of Education, all schools covering compulsory education period, from grade 1 to 9, are not allowed to adopt overseas textbooks.

A spokesman said, based on the policy, if domestic textbooks can’t meet their pedagogical needs, Sino-foreign high schools or programs, high schools’ overseas course programs approved by relevant education authorities, secondary vocational schools, along with colleges and universities can use overseas textbooks, and they are encouraged to use foreign textbooks translated and published by Chinese publishers.
