The outbreak of the novel coronavirus has forced China’s authorities to prolong schools’ closure to curb the spread of virus.

The Ministry of Education of China on Monday announced kindergartens, primary and secondary schools, as well as colleges and universities should postpone the spring semester until further notice.

The ministry said students who left their schools for the Spring Festival holiday should not return without approval of the school, and schools should remind their students to stay and learn at home during the winter vacation.

Decisions on resuming public education should be made based on local situations, according to the ministry.

China’s State Council announced on Monday that seven-day Chinese New Year break from January 24 to 30 would be extended to February 2, and meanwhile, public schools should postpone the spring semester until further notice from the Ministry of Education.

Provincial governments including Hubei, Beijing, Shanghai, Shandong and Zhejiang have also announced to extend local schools’ closure.
