Online Learning Platform Udemy Raises $50M from Japanese Educational Publisher Benesse

Udemy, a San Francisco-based online learning and teaching marketplace, raised $50 million from Benesse Holdings, a Japanese educational publisher.

The investment brings Udemy’s total funding to more than $200 million, with the valuation at $2 billion.

Founded in 2009, Udemy provides an online learning platform for students, businesses, and governments. Nearly 50 million students are learning from 57,000 expert instructors, with topics ranging from programming and data science to leadership and team building.

Udemy’s corporate learning product Udemy for Business as of 2019 has provided an employee training and development platform for 5,000 companies, including Adidas, Booking.com, Pinterest, Toyota, and Wipro. Its product Udemy for Government is designed to meet demands from government agencies.

The company plans to expand San Francisco headquarters and offices in Denver, Ireland, India, Brazil and Turkey.
