Tencent announced recently that ABCmouse suspends to sell courses from Tuesday due to business adjustment.
According to the regulations announced in July, offline tutoring on academic subjects and all online tutoring to preschoolers are not allowed. ABCmouse, an English learning app designed for children aged 3-8, is in the scope of regulation. As of May 2021, over 36 million children and 200,000 teachers across the world have used ABCmouse.
JMD also noticed that online courses on academic subjects are not shown on the website of Qi'e Fudao, a Tencent-owned online education platform targeted at primary and secondary students. Instead, online courses related to the family education, which is encouraged by China’s government, appear on the website.
Tencent and Age of Learning launched ABCmouse English learning program in China in 2018, with Tencent handling product development, marketing, sales, and customer support. The brand was then upgraded by Tencent in 2020.
