Online Education Platform MasterClass Secures $100M to Create More Celebrity-Taught Classes

master class.pngMasterClass, a San Francisco-based startup, has recently raised $100 million in a Series E round led by Fidelity Management & Research Company, with participation from new investors including Owl Ventures, 01 Advisors and existing investors NEA, IVP, Atomico and NextEquity Partners. As of date, the total capital it has raised exceeds $200 million.

Founded in 2012, MasterClass is an online platform that invites celebrity to teach classes. Combining entertainment and education, the platform has produced 85 classes taught by well-known people.

Instructors on the platform include Jane Goodall, Martin Scorsese, Christina Aguilera, James Patterson, Usher, Annie Leibovitz, and Serena Williams.

Users need to pay an annual subscription fee of $180 to access its library of content. 100% of MasterClass’s revenue come from the subscription model, according to Tech Crunch.

CEO and co-founder David Rogier said that the capital will be used to create new classes for students.
