Qwen retools its learning features to teach the why, not just the answer

Alibaba's Qwen app has upgraded its learning features, adding unit-level writing coaching aligned to the primary school textbook, in-depth walkthroughs of lower-secondary Chinese and mathematics curricula, and expanded photo-based problem explanations for senior secondary and university-level maths, physics and chemistry. All of the features are free.

The through-line of the update is a deliberate shift away from handing over answers and toward guiding the learning process. Rather than resolving a question in a single step, Qwen is built to keep students working on why something is true and how to think about it.

In primary school composition, for example, Qwen asks a sequence of questions around the assignment instead of supplying a model essay. For a fifth-grade unit titled "My Most Cherished Possession," it asks which object the student most wants to write about, why that object matters to them, and what memorable thing happened between them — pushing the student toward the specific detail worth writing and toward making the emotion concrete.

The lower-secondary material is built around starting from wherever a student got stuck. The new lecture modules cover Chinese and maths textbooks at that level, and a student can begin from a single chapter or a single knowledge point. When a class first meets quadratic equations in grade nine, Qwen reviews linear equations in one variable before drawing the comparison. Students can interrupt at any point — an unclear concept, a confusing sentence, a solution step — and ask again; Qwen adjusts both the content and the pace to the specific question asked.

At senior secondary and university level, where problems run to more steps and longer derivations, the interactive explanation now extends to maths, physics and chemistry. A student who stalls on one transformation can ask why that step was taken or how the next one was arrived at, and continue from exactly there.

"An AI learning product cannot only care whether a single question was answered correctly," said Cheng Fei, who heads Qwen's intelligent learning business. "What matters more is whether the student has genuinely understood the knowledge, and whether they can solve a similar new problem on their own." More important than supplying an answer, he said, is that students learn why, and learn how to think.

Qwen says the point of step-by-step guidance and sustained questioning is to build independent learning and reasoning through repeated cycles of understanding and problem-solving — a capability that carries over to questions the app has never seen.
